O-2 Visa for Support Staff of O-1 Artists and Athletes
The O-2 visa explained from the regulation: who counts as essential support, why it needs its own petition, how long it lasts, and O-2 visas issued by nationality in FY2023 to FY2025.
Page reviewed October 30, 2026.
What it is
The O-2 is for a person who is an integral part of an O-1 artist's or athlete's performance and has critical skills and experience with that person that a U.S. worker does not have.
It is not for support staff of O-1 scientists, educators or business people. The O-2 needs its own petition, separate from the O-1's, and a written contract or a summary of the oral agreement. Validity is up to three years. In fiscal year 2025 the State Department issued 15,356 O-2 visas, which is 0.77 for every O-1 issued, by our sums of its monthly tables.

Who qualifies as an O-2
The regulation limits the O-2 to people who accompany an O-1 alien in the arts or athletics. It says in so many words that O-2 aliens may not accompany O-1 aliens in the fields of science, business or education.
The person must assist in the O-1's performance, be an integral part of the actual performance, and have critical skills and experience with the O-1 that are not of a general nature and are not possessed by a U.S. worker.
For motion pictures and television, the test is different: a pre-existing, longstanding working relationship with the O-1, or, for a production with significant work both inside and outside the U.S., that the person's continued participation is essential to the production. The prior-relationship wording appears in that test, and we did not find it as a stated requirement for the arts and athletics test.
The regulation also requires a residence abroad that the person has no intention of abandoning. The Foreign Affairs Manual says that, unlike the O-1, an O-2 applicant has no dual intent.
A separate petition, with its own evidence
- The O-2 is filed on a separate Form I-129 from the O-1. The regulation says O-2 aliens must be filed for on a separate petition from the O-1 alien, and the O-1 and the O-2 each need their own petition.
- The petition needs a written contract or a summary of the terms of the oral agreement, the itinerary, and the events and dates, along with evidence of the person's current essentiality, critical skills and experience with the O-1 and of substantial experience in the support role.
- A consultation is required. For an O-2 it must come from a labor organization. Motion picture and television cases need both a labor and a management organization. A letter of no objection is accepted.
- The Foreign Affairs Manual does not allow substitution of O-2 beneficiaries.
Validity, stay and work
- Validity is up to three years, plus 10 days before and 10 days after the validity period.
- An extension of stay is granted in increments of up to one year to complete the same event. A new event can support up to three years.
- The O-2 may not work separate and apart from the O-1. A change of employer is allowed only together with the O-1's change of employer.
- The visa itself is never longer than the petition, and a shorter validity on the State Department's reciprocity schedule prevails.
O-3 family members
The spouse and unmarried children under 21 of an O-2 can come on O-3 visas, with the same admission period and limits as the principal. They may not work on an O-3. They may study full-time or part-time.
At the consulate
The Foreign Affairs Manual lets the consulate schedule an interview from an approved I-129 or I-797 notice, or from the applicant's confirmation. It says no O visa is issued unless the approval is in State's systems.
We could not read the State Department's own O-visa pages on October 30, 2026, because the site blocked automated reads, so we do not state its document checklist for O-2 applicants. Check the live page before you book.
O-2 visas issued by nationality, FY2023 to FY2025
These are our sums of the State Department's monthly tables of nonimmigrant visas issued by nationality, October to September. They count visas issued abroad. Worldwide, O-2 visas were 13,362 in FY2023, 13,937 in FY2024 and 15,356 in FY2025. The ten nationalities below received 10,347 of the 15,356 issued in FY2025, which is 67.4%. We give no reason for any movement, because no source does.

Countries where O-2 visas outnumber O-1 visas
In FY2025 four of the ten nationalities above received more O-2 visas than O-1 visas: Mexico, South Korea, Colombia and Japan. The United Kingdom is close, with 2,919 O-2 against 3,023 O-1. Nothing in the sources explains why, and the data does not say which kinds of support staff are involved.
What we have not confirmed
- The State Department's own O-visa pages and how its reciprocity schedule lists the O-2 beside the O-1 and O-3. We confirmed only the Foreign Affairs Manual rule on validity.
- The paragraph numbering of the O-2 definition in the current eCFR text. We cite the section as a whole.
- Whether the Foreign Affairs Manual sections we read, which carry 2022 and 2023 revision stamps, have since changed.
Common questions
What is the O-2 visa?
A visa for essential support personnel who accompany an O-1 artist or athlete. The person must be an integral part of the performance and have critical skills and experience with the O-1 that a U.S. worker does not have.
Can the O-2 be filed on the same petition as the O-1?
No. The regulation requires the O-2 to be filed on a separate petition from the O-1, with its own Form I-129.
Can support staff of an O-1 scientist or business person use the O-2?
No. The regulation says O-2 aliens may not accompany O-1 aliens in the fields of science, business or education.
How long is the O-2 valid?
Up to three years, with 10 days before and 10 days after. The visa cannot be longer than the approved petition, and a shorter validity on the State Department's reciprocity schedule prevails.
Can an O-2 holder work for someone else?
Not separately from the O-1. A change of employer is allowed only together with the O-1's change of employer.
Can an O-2's spouse and children work?
No. They can come on O-3 visas and may study, but they may not work.
