O-1A Press & Media Criterion

How to prove you have been the subject of published material in major media.

USCIS wants to see published material about you in professional or major trade publications or major national media. For O-1A candidates, the focus is trade press covering your specific field — TechCrunch for founders, Nature or Cell for scientists, WSJ or FT for executives. The press must be about you specifically, not just mention you in passing.

Types of evidence

Founder / executive profiles

Long-form articles centred on you as a leader — TechCrunch profile, Forbes 30-under-30 write-up, WSJ leader interview.

Scientific press coverage

Coverage of your research in Nature News, Science News, MIT Tech Review, IEEE Spectrum, or field-specific outlets like Physics Today.

Named quotes and expert commentary

Articles where you're quoted as an authority — industry commentary, expert analysis pieces, congressional testimony coverage.

Podcast and video features

Named appearances on established podcasts (a16z, Acquired, Odd Lots), keynote coverage, industry-conference recordings.

Award announcements

Press coverage of awards, recognitions, or industry lists you appear on (Forbes 30U30, Fast Company Most Creative, MIT TR35).

Outlet reach data

Circulation, unique monthly visitors, or third-party reach data for each publication so USCIS sees the outlet meets the 'major' bar.

Evidence by profession

Startup founders

TechCrunch, Forbes, Bloomberg, WSJ, The Information, Sifted, PitchBook, industry-specific trades (Modern Retail, Restaurant Business, MedTech Dive).

Researchers

Nature News, Science, MIT Technology Review, IEEE Spectrum, Wired, coverage in mainstream science sections (NYT Science, WaPo Science).

Executives

WSJ, FT, Fortune, Barron's, Bloomberg, HBR, industry trades. C-suite profiles and named leadership commentary carry weight.

Engineers

TechCrunch, The Information, InfoWorld, IEEE Spectrum, ACM Queue, conference-talk coverage, open-source-project press.

Athletes

ESPN, Sports Illustrated, national-league press, sport-specific outlets (Golfweek, Cycling News, Runner's World, Tennis Magazine).

Consultants

HBR, WSJ, Financial Times, McKinsey Quarterly (if authored), industry-specific trades. Op-eds and thought leadership pieces you've authored also qualify.

How we build this criterion

Audit and rank your existing coverage

We compile every piece — profile features, named quotes, panel discussions, interviews — and rank by outlet quality, publication reach, and directness of focus on you.

Attach reach documentation

For every publication, we include circulation, MOZ / SimilarWeb data, or audience reports so USCIS can independently verify the 'major' claim.

Fill gaps where realistic

If coverage is thin, we identify realistic outlets, help pitch via warm introductions, and coordinate with PR if needed before filing.
