O-1B Awards & Recognition Criterion

USCIS wants to see significant recognition from experts, critics, organisations, or government bodies. The word 'significant' is doing work: a local competition prize means less than a national industry award, which means less than a globally-recognised prize. Nominations and shortlist placements count, and often carry substantial weight even without wins.

Types of evidence

Major industry awards

Grammy, Oscar, Emmy, Tony, Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA, DGA, PGA, WGA, ACE — wins and nominations both count.

Festival awards

Cannes Palme d'Or, Sundance Grand Jury Prize, Venice Golden Lion, Berlin Golden Bear, and equivalent.

Genre-specific awards

Blues Music Awards, IBMA, ARIA, Juno, MTV VMAs, Independent Spirit Awards, GLAAD, NAACP Image Awards, etc.

Fellowships and grants

MacArthur, Guggenheim, USA Fellowship, NEA grants, national-council-of-the-arts equivalents.

Press-driven recognition

Top-year lists in major publications (NYT Best of, Sight & Sound Best Films, Metacritic Top 20).

Award documentation

Official certificates, announcement press releases, awards-body communications, press coverage of the win or nomination.

Evidence by profession

Musicians

Grammy, Latin Grammy, BRIT Awards, Juno, MTV, ARIA, Mercury Prize, Ivor Novello; genre-specific awards; songwriter halls of fame.

Filmmakers

Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe, DGA, PGA, ASC, Independent Spirit; festival prizes (Cannes, Sundance, Venice, Berlin, TIFF).

Dancers

Prix Benois de la Danse, Bessie Awards, National Dance Awards, Olivier Awards for dance categories, dance-company promotions.

Actors
