O-1B Distinguished Organizations Criterion
How to prove you have worked with distinguished companies, labels, studios, or brands.
How USCIS states this criterion
Evidence that the beneficiary has performed, and will perform, in a lead, starring, or critical role for organizations and establishments that have a distinguished reputation evidenced by articles in newspapers, trade journals, publications, or testimonials.
This is criterion 3 of six for the O-1B (arts). A petition must meet at least three of the six unless it rests on a significant national or international award or prize. Source: Policy Manual, Chapter 4, checked September 21, 2026.
USCIS wants to see that you performed for, worked with, or were affiliated with organizations, establishments, or events that have a distinguished reputation in your field. The key USCIS test: is the organization itself well-regarded, and does your affiliation with it demonstrate the level you operate at?
Types of evidence
Signed engagement contracts
Contracts with the distinguished label, studio, gallery, festival, or company documenting the relationship and scope.
Program / credit documentation
Programs, playbills, credits, or event listings placing you inside the distinguished organization's roster.
Public affiliation notices
Press releases, tour announcements, or gallery listings showing you as part of the organization's roster or program.
Distinction documentation
Evidence that the organization itself is distinguished: awards, rankings, press coverage, membership standards, or historical significance.
Expert letters
Written statements from the organization's director, curator, artistic director, or A&R lead attesting to your engagement.
Compensation records
Contracts or invoices showing the fee level, which independently signals the tier of the engagement.
Evidence by profession
Musicians
Signed to a major or respected independent label; performed at Coachella, Glastonbury, Primavera, Lollapalooza, Newport, or major concert halls (Carnegie, Royal Albert, Sydney Opera House).
Filmmakers
Distribution deals with A24, Neon, Focus Features, Searchlight, Netflix Originals, HBO, Amazon Studios; selections at Sundance, Cannes, TIFF, Venice, SXSW.
Dancers
Company member at ABT, NYCB, Alvin Ailey, Royal Ballet, Paris Opéra, San Francisco Ballet, or comparable companies.
Actors
Credits on productions from A-list studios and streamers; theatre credits from Broadway, West End, or major regional companies (Steppenwolf, Public, Old Vic).
Designers
Design credits with recognized fashion houses (Chanel, Prada, Balenciaga, LVMH labels); costume design for major productions.
Visual artists
Exhibitions at recognized institutions (MoMA, Tate, Gagosian, David Zwirner, Hauser & Wirth, Whitney) or major biennales (Venice, Documenta).
How we build this criterion
Identify the strongest 2-3 engagements
We rank your affiliations by the organization's reputation and how central your role was, and pick the ones that carry the most weight.
Document each side
For every engagement, we document (a) that the organization is distinguished and (b) that you were meaningfully part of it. Both are needed.
Coordinate corroboration
We source a letter from someone inside the organization attesting to your role, and pair it with contracts and public listings.
