# O-1A Original Contributions Criterion

How to prove your work has made a major impact on your field.

## How USCIS states this criterion

Evidence of the beneficiary's original scientific, scholarly, or business-related contributions of major significance in the field.

This is criterion 5 of eight for the O-1A. A petition must meet at least three of the eight unless it rests on a major internationally recognized award. Source: [Policy Manual, Chapter 4](https://www.uscis.gov/policy-manual/volume-2-part-m-chapter-4), checked September 21, 2026.

**Quick answer.** O-1A Original Contributions Criterion is one of the 8 O-1A evidence criteria. A petition shows a major award or at least three criteria, and USCIS then weighs the whole record. USCIS wants to see evidence of original scientific, scholarly, or business-related contributions of major significance.

USCIS wants to see evidence of original scientific, scholarly, or business-related contributions of major significance. This is often the most-scrutinised criterion for O-1A because 'major significance' is subjective, the case rests on documenting the downstream impact of your work. Patents, cited publications, novel products, and industry-adoption evidence all count when framed correctly.

## Types of evidence

### Patents

Granted patents (US and international), with documentation of citations by other patents or adoption in commercial products.

### Cited publications

Peer-reviewed papers with citation counts from Google Scholar, Web of Science, or Scopus. Field-normalised percentiles carry weight.

### Product / technology adoption

Products, systems, or methodologies you originated that have been adopted by others, user counts, adoption metrics, integrations.

### Awards recognizing the contribution

Field awards, patents-related honors, or research prizes specifically tied to the contribution.

### Media coverage of the contribution

Press covering the significance of your specific work, not just you as a person, but the impact of what you built or discovered.

### Expert letters on impact

Letters from independent researchers, industry practitioners, or peer reviewers describing how your work changed the field or is used by others.

## Evidence by profession

### [Startup founders](https://trylando.com/o1a-visa/startup-founders)

Novel product, technology, or business model with documented adoption, customer counts, revenue, market recognition. Patents also count.

### [Researchers](https://trylando.com/o1a-visa/researchers)

Cited publications with high h-index; patents; publications in Nature/Science/Cell; new methodologies adopted by other labs.

### Executives

Novel business strategies documented in case studies, new products or business units they created, industry-wide adoption of practices they pioneered.

### Engineers

Open-source projects with meaningful adoption; patents cited by industry; systems used by millions; publications in top ACM/IEEE venues.

### Athletes

New techniques, training methodologies, or coaching frameworks adopted across the sport. Rarely applies to competitive athletes without a coaching or innovation angle.

### Consultants

Published methodologies (books, HBR articles, whitepapers) that have been adopted by the industry. Recognized frameworks with named attribution.

## How we build this criterion

### Identify the 2-3 strongest contributions

We rank your contributions by documented downstream impact, not by count. One contribution with clear adoption beats ten with none.

### Document downstream impact

For every contribution, we compile evidence of adoption: citations, license agreements, user counts, product adoption metrics, or references by other work.

### Source expert letters on impact

We coordinate letters from independent experts (not co-authors) describing how your work changed practice, methodology, or the state of the field.

## Common questions

What counts as evidence for the O-1A Original Contributions criterion?
Examples include patents, cited publications, product / technology adoption, awards recognizing the contribution. The strongest cases combine several types of evidence, because no single document is enough on its own.
What are common mistakes with the O-1A Original Contributions criterion?
Filing a patent isn't enough, USCIS wants evidence the patent has been cited by others, licensed, or commercialised. Publications without citation data, 'I've published 15 papers' matters much less than 'my h-index is 22' or '5 papers cited 100+ times.'
How many O-1A criteria do I need to meet?
A petition shows a major internationally recognized award, or at least three of the 8 O-1A criteria. USCIS then considers all the evidence in its totality, so the quality of each piece of evidence matters as much as the count.
How does Lando build the O-1A Original Contributions criterion?
Lando works in 3 steps: identify the 2-3 strongest contributions, document downstream impact, source expert letters on impact. Lando is not a law firm; petitions are prepared in coordination with licensed U.S. immigration attorneys.
