# O-1A Awards & Recognition Criterion

How to prove you have received nationally or internationally recognized awards.

## How USCIS states this criterion

Documentation of the beneficiary’s receipt of nationally or internationally recognized prizes or awards for excellence in the field of endeavor.

This is criterion 1 of eight for the O-1A. A petition must meet at least three of the eight unless it rests on a major internationally recognized award. Source: [Policy Manual, Chapter 4](https://www.uscis.gov/policy-manual/volume-2-part-m-chapter-4), checked September 21, 2026.

**Quick answer.** O-1A Awards & Recognition Criterion is one of the 8 O-1A evidence criteria. A petition shows a major award or at least three criteria, and USCIS then weighs the whole record. USCIS wants to see nationally or internationally recognized prizes or awards for excellence in your field.

USCIS wants to see nationally or internationally recognized prizes or awards for excellence in your field. The word 'nationally or internationally recognized' matters, a company-internal 'Employee of the Year' award doesn't qualify. What matters is that the award is issued by a recognized body and is competitive within your specific field.

## How we build this criterion

### Rank awards by tier

We categorise awards into major-industry / national / regional / competitive-program tiers so the strongest sit at the top of the exhibit.

### Document each awarding body

Every award submitted includes evidence of the awarding body's history, selectivity, and recognition in the field.

### Corroborate with press

We attach press coverage of each award or recognition so USCIS reads it as recognized in the field, not just an internal or paid certificate.

## Common questions

What counts as evidence for the O-1A Awards & Recognition criterion?
Examples include major industry awards, fellowships and grants, business honors lists, government or state honors. The strongest cases combine several types of evidence, because no single document is enough on its own.
What are common mistakes with the O-1A Awards & Recognition criterion?
Company-internal awards ('Employee of the Quarter') presented as external recognition, these don't qualify without external validation. Small-industry awards without documentation of the awarding body's stature, every award needs 'who awards it and why it matters' attached.
How many O-1A criteria do I need to meet?
A petition shows a major internationally recognized award, or at least three of the 8 O-1A criteria. USCIS then considers all the evidence in its totality, so the quality of each piece of evidence matters as much as the count.
How does Lando build the O-1A Awards & Recognition criterion?
Lando works in 3 steps: rank awards by tier, document each awarding body, corroborate with press. Lando is not a law firm; petitions are prepared in coordination with licensed U.S. immigration attorneys.
