While this contribution is most directly relevant to the original-contributions criterion, it also supports a narrative of sustained scholarly contribution to the field's knowledge base that complements a formal publication record, particularly for government-based seismologists who may have thinner academic publication histories.

Critical role in seismic networks and programs

The petition letter should explain the petitioner's career arc, the scientific program they have led, and the significance of their contributions in terms the adjudicator can follow without specialized background in seismology. Technical jargon should be minimized in the petition letter and reserved for the exhibits and expert declarations, where it can be explained in context by an expert witness who can translate seismological significance into plain language.

Expert declarations from recognized seismologists at peer institutions — ideally those who have independently cited the petitioner's work, collaborated on international programs, or served alongside the petitioner on national committees — are the most persuasive category of supporting evidence. Each declaration should address specific contributions, specific evidence items, and specific comparisons to peers rather than general assessments of the petitioner's overall quality. A letter from a department chair at a major seismology program that describes the petitioner as distinguished without explaining what distinguishes the petitioner from other seismologists of the same career stage is less useful than a letter from a field expert who can explain precisely what the petitioner's research has contributed and why it matters to earthquake science or seismic hazard assessment.

Timing considerations for seismology petitions are similar to those in other Earth science fields. Petitions filed while the petitioner is actively producing research and accumulating evidence — during a peak active research period, while an NSF grant is running, while serving on an ANSS committee — are stronger than petitions filed during administrative periods when the petitioner's research output has temporarily slowed. If a significant earthquake occurs and the petitioner leads the scientific response — characterizing the event, publishing the source model, deploying temporary instruments for aftershock monitoring — the rapid production of peer-reviewed analysis following the event is itself evidence of both critical role in the field's infrastructure and extraordinary ability in the practice of seismology under real-world conditions.
