For dipterists, this criterion is often underutilized — many qualified researchers have substantial peer review records that go undocumented in their petitions simply because they never thought to collect the evidence. Identify the most prominent example of critical role — the specific grant, collection, or research program that best illustrates institutional dependence on this researcher's expertise. If the salary argument is borderline, deprioritize it and develop a stronger showing on the criteria where the evidence is clearly above the ordinary-level threshold. A well-documented petition on three or four strong criteria is more persuasive than a thin showing on all eight.
